How Florida works out what you owe
- Taxable base = price - trade-in
- State tax = taxable base x 6%
- Surtax = min(taxable base, $5,000) x county surtax rate
- Title = base + security + service charge (+ lien, mail, out-of-state, new vehicle, expedited, late fees as applicable)
- Registration = initial registration fee (first Florida plate only) + weight tax + plate
- Total = tax + title + registration + doc fee
What to bring
The title signed over by the seller (with the odometer reading), a bill of sale, proof of insurance and your ID. If the car still has a loan, the lender must release the lien first.
