Which states have no EV registration fee?

Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Mexico, New York charge no extra EV registration fee in 2026 (New Mexico phases one in from 2027). For a few other states our data shows no fee but recent reports differ, so check with the DMV.

Why do states charge EVs more to register?

Gas taxes pay for roads, and electric cars buy no gas. Most states replace that lost revenue with a flat yearly fee at registration; some charge plug-in hybrids and regular hybrids a smaller fee too.

Do plug-in hybrids and hybrids pay the EV fee?
