How much is car sales tax in Utah?

Utah taxes vehicles at the combined state and local sales tax rate for your registration address. The state portion is 4.85%, and local taxes come on top. Registration adds an age-based uniform fee that's highest on the newest cars.

Take the price, subtract your vehicle trade-in and any manufacturer rebate, and add the dealer's documentary fee, which is taxable when listed separately. Multiply by the combined rate for your address.

Passenger registration is $44. On top of that, the 2026 uniform fee depends on model year: $150 for 2024 and newer, $110 for 2021–2023, $80 for 2018–2020, $50 for 2015–2017 and $10 for 2014 and older.

Hybrids add $21.75 a year and plug-in hybrids $56.50. Electric vehicles pay an amount equal to the road usage charge cap: $180 in 2026.

  1. Taxable base = price - trade-in - rebate + taxable doc fee
  2. Tax = taxable base x combined rate
  3. Registration = base + uniform age-based fee + driver ed + uninsured motorist + corridor fee (listed counties) + air pollution fee (listed counties) + powertrain fee
  4. Total = tax + title + registration + doc fee
