How much is car sales tax in New Hampshire?
New Hampshire has no sales or use tax on vehicles. Instead, when you register, your town or city charges a municipal permit fee based on the vehicle's original list price (MSRP), and the state adds a registration fee based on weight.
The municipal permit fee is the MSRP (rounded to the nearest $100) times a mill rate that drops as the vehicle ages: 18 mills for the current model year, then 15, 12, 9, 6, and 3 mills for vehicles five or more years older. The minimum is $5. It uses the maker's list price, not the price you paid.
From January 1, 2026, state registration is $42 for passenger vehicles up to 3,000 lb, $48 from 3,001 to 5,000 lb and $66 from 5,001 to 8,000 lb. Motorcycles are $30.
A title costs $35 from January 1, 2026 (up from $25), with or without a lien. Plates are $8. Towns may add their own agent fee.
New Hampshire is one of five states without a general state sales tax; the others are Alaska, Delaware, Montana and Oregon. Each charges something different when you buy or register a car, so compare them in our overview of states with no sales tax on cars.
- Municipal permit = max($5, rounded MSRP x mills / 1,000)
