How much is car sales tax in North Carolina?
North Carolina doesn't charge sales tax on vehicles. Instead you pay a one-time 3% highway use tax (HUT) when the title is transferred, with no local rate added.
For a dealer purchase, take the price, subtract your trade-in and add the dealer's doc fee, then multiply by 3%. For a private sale, it's 3% of the price minus any trade-in.
Two caps apply in special cases: new residents who have owned the vehicle for at least 90 days pay no more than $250, and commercial vehicles (Class A/B) and RVs are capped at $2,000.
Fees from the 2024 adjustment: a $66.75 title (or $126 for one-day service), $46.25 private passenger registration, and $25.50 to record a lien. Battery EVs pay $214.50 a year and plug-in hybrids $107.25. County property tax is billed separately.
North Carolina isn't the only state with its own vehicle tax in place of sales tax: Georgia charges a one-time title ad valorem tax, South Carolina an infrastructure maintenance fee and Oklahoma an excise tax. Compare them in our car sales tax by state overview.
- Dealer: net = price - trade-in + doc fee; private: net = price - trade-in
- HUT = net x 3% (capped where applicable)
- Total = HUT + title + plate + local tag fee + EV fee + lien + late fee + property tax + emissions + doc fee
