How much is car sales tax in New Mexico?
New Mexico charges a statewide 4% motor vehicle excise tax (MVET) when you title a vehicle. It isn't the gross receipts tax, and it doesn't vary by county.
Take the price, subtract your trade-in and any manufacturer rebate applied at the sale, and multiply by 4%. Dealer documentation and transfer-service fees aren't included. For private sales, New Mexico taxes at least 80% of the vehicle's NADA average value.
Registration depends on weight and age, and rose 25% on July 1, 2026. For a passenger vehicle over 3,000 lb, it's $70 a year in its first five model years and $56.25 after that. Lighter vehicles pay less. Renewing online saves 5%.
Title costs $5, plus a $3 transaction fee and a $1.50 tire recycling fee. There's no EV surcharge in 2026; one is scheduled to phase in from 2027.
- Net = price - trade-in - rebate (doc fee excluded)
- Private: taxable = greater of net or 80% of NADA average trade-in
- Tax = taxable x 4% (x1.5 if titled more than 90 days late)
- Total = tax + title + transaction fee + registration + tire fee + late transfer fee + doc fee
