How much does it cost to register a car?

It depends heavily on the state: for a new $30,000 gas car from a dealer (3,500 lb, MSRP $32,000), title and registration run from $30 in Kentucky to $836 in Maine, and the middle state comes in around $127.25. Local add-ons, such as county fees or a yearly property tax, come on top in some states.

Those numbers come from running each state's calculator on this site with the same car, so you can compare like with like. The full table is below.

What decides your registration fee?

Each state picks its own formula, and many combine several of these. That is why two cars with the same price can get very different bills.

  • A flat fee that is the same for every passenger car.
  • Weight: heavier vehicles pay more, often in bands of a few hundred pounds.
  • Value and age: a percentage of the car's value or list price that falls as the car gets older, as with Nevada's Governmental Services Tax.
  • Fuel economy: Oregon sets its title and registration fees by miles per gallon.
  • Electric and hybrid surcharges that replace the fuel tax those cars don't pay.

In Iowa and South Dakota, registration is set by the county (by weight, age or value), so the amount shown is title fees only and those states are left out of the range above. Estimates only. Some states set registration by county, by plate type or on a multi-year term; the state pages explain each case. Confirm the amount with your DMV before paying.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to register a new car?

For a new $30,000 gas car from a dealer (3,500 lb, MSRP $32,000), our calculators put title and registration between $30 (Kentucky) and $836 (Maine), with a typical state around $127.25. County fees, local taxes and property taxes can add to that.

Is registration included in the sales tax?

No. Sales tax (or the tax your state charges instead) is separate from the title and registration fees. Our calculator shows both, so you can see the full government cost of the purchase.

Why is my registration fee higher than the estimate?

Many states and counties add local fees, emissions or inspection fees, specialty plates, or a yearly property or value-based tax. Each state page lists the fees we include and any we could not confirm.

Do electric cars pay more to register?

In 33 of 51 jurisdictions our calculators add an extra fee for an electric vehicle, usually to replace the gas tax EV owners don't pay. Pick "Electric" as the fuel type in the calculator to include it.
