How much is car sales tax in Georgia?
Georgia doesn't charge sales tax on vehicles. Instead you pay a one-time title ad valorem tax (TAVT) of 7% when you title the car. It replaces both sales tax and the old annual vehicle property tax, and there's no local rate on top.
For a new vehicle from a Georgia dealer, TAVT is charged on the price plus the doc fee, minus your trade-in and any rebate. For a used vehicle from a dealer the rebate doesn't count, but the trade-in still does.
For private sales and most special transfers, Georgia uses the fair market value in its own assessment manual, not the price on the bill of sale, and trade-ins don't reduce it.
Fees are small: an $18 title, a $20 tag, and a $10 penalty if you title more than 30 days after buying. Electric vehicles pay an annual alternative fuel fee of $238.59 for registrations from July 2026 to June 2027.
Georgia is one of several states that tax vehicles with something other than a regular sales tax: North Carolina charges a highway use tax, South Carolina an infrastructure maintenance fee and Oklahoma an excise tax. Compare them in our car sales tax by state overview.
- New from dealer: value = price + doc fee - trade-in - rebate
- Used from dealer: value = price + doc fee - trade-in (rebate does not reduce)
- Private / special transfers: value = Georgia assessment manual fair market value
- TAVT = value x rate
- Total = TAVT + title + tag + lemon law fee + AFV fee + emissions
Georgia car tax example with real numbers
New car from a Georgia dealer
You buy a new car for $35,000, pay a $599 doc fee, trade in your old car for $8,000 and get a $1,500 rebate.
- Taxable value: $35,000 + $599 − $8,000 − $1,500 = $26,099.
- TAVT: $26,099 × 7% = $1,826.93.
- Add the $18 title and $20 tag: $38.
- Estimated total: $1,864.93.

Georgia car tax FAQ
Is Georgia TAVT the same as sales tax?
No. It's a one-time title tax that replaces sales tax and annual property tax on the vehicle.
Does a rebate lower TAVT on a used car?
No. Rebates reduce the taxable value only on new vehicles bought from a Georgia dealer.
Do I get credit for tax paid in another state?
No. TAVT is an ad valorem tax, so Georgia gives no credit for sales tax paid elsewhere.
What does an EV cost to register in Georgia?
The $20 tag plus an annual alternative fuel fee of $238.59 (July 2026 to June 2027).
