How much is car sales tax in Oklahoma?
Oklahoma taxes vehicles twice at title time: a 3.25% motor vehicle excise tax and a smaller 1.25% sales tax. Because the vehicle sales tax applies, no additional city or county sales tax is charged.
For a new vehicle, excise tax is 3.25% of the price. For a used vehicle, it's $20 on the first $1,500 plus 3.25% of the rest. Your trade-in doesn't reduce the excise.
The 1.25% sales tax is charged on the price minus your trade-in. That's the only place a trade-in helps.
Fees include an $11 title, a $17 transfer fee, $1.50 insurance verification and $1.75 for the plate decal. Registration falls with age: $96 a year in years 1–4, $86 in years 5–8, $66, $46, and $26 from year 17. Some of these amounts, including the 1.25% rate and the used-vehicle excise formula, haven't yet been confirmed on an official page, so check with a tag agent.
Oklahoma's main vehicle tax is an excise tax rather than a regular sales tax, an approach several states share: Georgia charges a one-time title ad valorem tax, North Carolina a highway use tax and South Carolina an infrastructure maintenance fee. Like California and Virginia, Oklahoma also doesn't let a trade-in reduce that tax.
- New: excise = price x 3.25% (rounded to the dollar)
- Used: excise = $20 + 3.25% x (price - $1,500)
- Sales tax = (price - trade-in) x 1.25%
- Total = excise + sales tax + title fees + registration + EV/PHEV fee + tire fee + specialty plate + doc fee
Oklahoma car tax example with real numbers
Used car with a trade-in
You buy a $2,020 car for $15,000 and trade in your old one for $3,000.
- Excise tax: $20 + 3.25% × ($15,000 − $1,500) = $459, rounded to the dollar. The trade-in doesn't count here.
- Sales tax: ($15,000 − $3,000) × 1.25% = $150.
- Title, transfer, insurance verification, decal and registration (year 7: $86) add $117.25.
- Estimated total: $726.25.
