How much is car sales tax in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin charges a 5% state sales tax on vehicles, plus county tax (and in Milwaukee, city tax) for the place where the vehicle will be kept, not where the dealer is. The title fee is one of the highest in the country at $214.50.
Subtract your trade-in from the price. For a dealer sale, add the dealer's doc fee. Manufacturer rebates don't reduce the tax. Multiply by 5% plus your county and city rates.
If you buy from a private seller, they don't collect the tax. You pay it when you title and register the vehicle.
The original or transfer title costs $214.50 (since October 1, 2025). Annual passenger auto registration is $85, plus $12 for a pair of plates. Electric vehicles add a $175 surcharge each year and hybrids $75. Many municipalities and counties also charge a wheel tax.
- Taxable base = price - trade-in (+ doc fee for dealer sales); rebate not subtracted
- Tax = taxable base x (state + county + city rates) for the location where vehicle is kept
- Registration = vehicle fee + plates + specialty plate + EV/hybrid surcharge + wheel tax
- Total = tax + title + registration + lien + doc fee
