How much is car sales tax in Alabama?

Alabama taxes vehicles at a special 2% state automotive rate, half the 4% general sales tax rate. Your city and county add their own automotive rate on top, based on where you live, not where the dealer is.

Start with the purchase price. If you buy from a dealer, the trade-in value comes off. The dealer's documentary fee is added back, because Alabama treats it as part of the taxable price. A manufacturer rebate does not reduce the taxable amount.

Multiply that amount by 2% for the state, then by your local automotive rate for the city and county. Private-party purchases get no trade-in credit.

Title costs $15, plus a $3 fee to the licensing official and $15 more if a lien is recorded. A standard plate is $23 plus a $1.25 issuance fee. Electric vehicles add $203 a year and plug-in hybrids $103. County ad valorem (property) tax is billed on top and varies.

  1. Taxable base = price - trade-in (dealer only) + doc fee
  2. Tax = taxable base x (2% state + local rate)
  3. Title = $15 + $3 licensing official fee (+ $15 lien notice)
  4. Registration = plate + issuance fee + EV/PHEV/LSEV fee + county ad valorem
  5. Total = tax + title + registration + doc fee

Alabama car tax example with real numbers

New car from a dealer with a trade-in

You buy a new SUV for $28,000 from a dealer, trade in your old car for $6,000, pay a $400 doc fee and get a $1,000 factory rebate. Your city and county automotive rates add up to 3%.

  1. Taxable amount: $28,000 − $6,000 trade-in + $400 doc fee = $22,400. The rebate doesn't count.
  2. State tax: $22,400 × 2% = $448.
  3. Local tax: $22,400 × 3% = $672.
  4. Add $42.25 in title and plate fees for an estimated $1,162.25, before county ad valorem tax.
